I know that this post has been overdue for some time now. (Some might say that it's unacceptably late and for whatever it's worth, I happen to agree.) But I had a few things that I wanted to express and I hope that the reception will be kind.
First, it's an honour for me to oversee a group of such incredible people. Despite my extreme bout of sporadic absences throughout the years, which I'm acutely aware of, I don't really want to step down or away from the vision I had when I first created this group, which basically amounted to a place filled with wholesome, toadlet-related content.
With that said, I'm aware that I should probably take on more moderators who I can discuss updates, events, and rules with, then actually follow through with hosting. If anyone is interested in taking on collaborations again (I particularly enjoyed our Switch-Around event ages ago), please let me know in the comments. And if anyone is interested in moderating with my rules, stringent though they may seem, you are welcome to discuss it with me.
One conversation that has been on the table recently has been memes and the rules regarding them in our group. Despite creating the Memes folder, I've been apprehensive to accept memes because they require a special type of cultural understanding. Not all memes are kitties looking grumpy. Many are fraught with drama and controversy and it would be immensely difficult to justify why certain memes are accepted, but some aren't.
Other incoming art is subject to very specific rules that includes or excludes such as no nudity, goriness, or pencil sketches on grid/lined paper. Since memes are very much a cultural phenomenon that frequently deal in things that are social and political (even if they don't immediately seem that way), it becomes much harder to set rules that are applicable across the board and I'm certain that I don't have the energy to debate why one meme is problematic while another isn't. I already struggle to interact as is and I don't want to be shut out of the fandom I care so much about because the little energy I have goes into debating memes. And any moderator who decides to work with me shouldn't have to spoil their energy reserve either.
I should also note that while I had allowed "stickers" in the past, I've grown less fond of the idea of accepting any art containing screenshots or any art not created by the submitting artist in question. This is something I'm willing to discuss with group members since I don't want to risk shutting out those who may enjoy seeing or creating certain things that require screenshots. (As an example, screenshot questionnaires.) To note, this rule wouldn't extend to people using things like stock images as long as the source can be cited and the original artist credited.
I realize this may seem left field after two years of practically being invisible, but I have been working on two (yes, two!) indie video games. One project is my own and the other isn't but still casts me in an integral role. Both of our games are also being developed with support from two other indie developers who also happen to be developing their own games. (That's four games in total!) It's exhilarating, but the organization required has been eye opening. To get a project going, you need good people. I already have good people here and it's frankly ridiculous that I haven't consulted more of the good people here sooner.
I'm currently seeking one moderator to start.
While there is no formal application process (if you're taking the time to message me, then I assume we're already more or less on the same page), my only requirement is that the moderator must have Discord so that they can contact me if things start going awry.
Please provide your feedback!
- Should we allow memes in the group as long as they meet currently established group standards?
- Should we allow Toad Patrol screenshots in the group or only allow original content? (Stock images and similar used to create new photomanipulation content excepted as long as original works are cited/original artist is credited.)
Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful, on-going support.
I don't think I'll ever be able to adequately express how much it means to me.
For those who don't already know, I'm developing a visual novel.
Updates will be posted to this Discord: https://discord.gg/GMKsKaczyW
You may also subscribe to the YouTube channel for future teasers, trailers, and announcements as they become available.
Good news and bad news.
The Bad:
Unfortunately, shortly after posting my last journal entry, I found out that my tablet had been damaged beyond repair so I won't be sharing much visual art of my own any time soon.
However, I will still be working with Second Life-related things so for those who want to see my shape modifications and avatar photography, I may still set up an art-related Discord for that. Let me know in the comments if something like that would interest you.
The Good:
After losing access to my drawing tablet, one of my friends (and a long-time artist) stepped up in a big way and is now helping me create graphics for my visual novel.
A demo or video presentation (debating which to go with) should become available within the next few months.
If anyone wants updates in the meantime, then click here to join the Discord server.
It's pretty minimalist right now since there isn't much to share yet, but I'm already looking forward to what will be accomplished.
If nothing else, it'll be nice to have support in the meantime.
Thank you all who have been patient with me.
DA's new layout has become... overwhelming to put it lightly. (How did the staff at DA honestly think this was better?)
Anyway, would anyone be interested in following me if I started a Discord server for my art?
The nice thing about Discord is that you can follow just the art you want to see by muting any channels that don't pertain to your interests.
I'll follow up once I've received some feedback.
