This was a gift that I promised to a very special friend (~poutinePoutine) after his pet betta fish (Spiky) passed away.
This friend has been following my writing since 2003 and has been one of my biggest supporters through all of that time, despite our hardships.
For nine years, we have confided in each other and shared a friendship unlike that of any other... and to commemorate our time together, I offered to draw him something special. He requested that we honour Spiky by having him do something heroic and when we tried to figure out what, we ended up referencing my writing from years past.
One of my stories included two characters by the names of Marco and Rufus. Marco died in a flood so Rufus could survive. With Marco no longer there to protect Rufus, we thought it would be a beautiful gesture for Spiky to save Rufus from suffering Marco's fate.
